Luxe Lodge

Bachelor Gulch, Colorado

The Meyers—Becky, Steve, and their three boys—have been spending summers in Colorado since 1986. They love to ski—except Becky, who jokes that she only puts on skis to meet everyone for lunch. Bachelor Gulch is a wonderful small community close to Beaver Creek and Vail where the Meyers have established friendships that they value greatly with people from all over the world.

Demand for building space in Bachelor Gulch was so competitive that a lottery was held. The Meyers were lucky to be awarded a place in the second round.

Built of stone with enormous exposed wood beams, their house is the iconic image of a mountain lodge, though Becky was very clear that the space should not be a cliché of that atmosphere. She wanted definite touches of glamour throughout.

Architects Ann Fehlner and Brian Judge designed the house to take maximum advantage of the magnificent mountain-range views. The layout is completely geared around capturing those vistas.

Becky loves antiques. That worked perfectly, because I take two buying trips to Europe each year for my antiques showroom in the Dallas Design District. While there, I also look for pieces for specific clients, as was the case with the Meyer project. We used one such find on the entry landing—a Directoire-style commode, which we paired with a completely unexpected mother-of-pearl Victorian mirror  and a French bronze-and-leather 1940s lamp. On the opposite side of the hall there is a Louis XVI–style zebra fauteuil and a Swedish table in mahogany that holds personal family photos.
