Tarrytown

Austin, TX

The homeowners—a well-traveled, art-collecting couple with three children—wanted to bring warmth and personality to their contemporary home while celebrating their incredible collection. They had struggled to make the house feel inviting and reached out after reading one of my books, curious to see my take on their space.

Modern architecture can be a challenge to decorate – leaning too stark. Our approach was the opposite: layered, complex, and playful, allowing the art to take center stage while the interiors added richness and depth. Every furnishing choice was intentionally made to complement the artwork rather than compete with it. We selected pieces with sculptural forms, rich textures, and a refined color palette. A standout moment is the living room’s striking Lichtenstein painting, an oversized, tongue-in-cheek depiction of a banal American living room, which became the ultimate conversation piece. Throughout the home, we used layered lighting, bold textures, and unexpected details to soften the modernity and create an atmosphere that feels dynamic yet intimate.

This project captures what makes Austin so unique—a balance of creativity, individuality, and a sense of fun.
